BRAGG, Charles Robert

No.13286, Private, Robert BRAGG
Aged 32

9th Battalion, Suffolk Regiment
Died of his Wounds on Friday, 13th April 1917

Charles Robert Bragg was born in 1884, (Newmarket Q4-1884 3B:541), the son of Richard and Ellen BRAGG (née WHYBROW). Registered as Charles Robert he seems generally to be referred to as Robert.

1891 census...Aged 6, he was at Brookside, Moulton with his father Richard BRAGG [50] farm labourer; his mother Ellen [38], sisters Betsy M [12] and Ruth V. [4] and brothers Thomas F. [10] and Charles R. [1]. All were born in Moulton. His mother had died in 1903 and his father had died in 1908.

1901 census...Aged 16, a labourer, he was still at Brookside, Moulton with his parents, brothers Thomas (labourer), Charles and Arthur [8] born in Moulton, and sister Ruth.

His mother died in 1903 and his father in 1908

1911 census...Aged 26, a farm labourer, he was still at Brookside but now with just his brothers, George, Thomas, Charles and Arthur, who were all farm labourers.

He may well be the Robert BRAGG who married Edith P.MEEKS in Kensington in 1916. CWGC documents show the personal message on his headstone to be from his wife Edith. Her address is given as Mrs E KAY, 31 Albert Road, Blackpool, but a second marriage registration has not yet been found.

Robert lived at the thatched cottage attached to the Shepherd and Dog Inn (now demolished) and worked at Moulton Paddocks.

He enlisted in Newmarket.
His Army records have not been found and without them, and his dying of wounds, it is impossible to say where or exactly when he was wounded. His battalion were in the line around Loos-Hulluch, extending northwards from the Double Crassier at Loos for about 6 miles. There were several minor attacks, the only one of note being on 10th April.
